Sunset Palliative Care Inc. is a non-profit, charitable organization committed to providing compassionate care to individuals living with a life-threatening or terminal illness, when hope of a cure is no longer medically possible. Palliative care is about living fully, to the very end of life, with dignity and comfort. The goal of care is to provide support and comfort to the patient and their family.
At some time, in some way, we must all face the end of life. And most of us share the hope: that when death comes to us or to a loved one, it will be peaceful and free of pain. We hope to be surrounded by those we love, feeling safe, comfortable, and cared for.
Sunset Palliative Care Inc. in Portage la Prairie has been providing compassionate care to community members in the hospital, personal care homes, or their residences. They base their operations around trained volunteers who sit with clients reading, chatting, and reminiscing with them when the medical team has deemed them palliative. Their amazing volunteers stay with patients in their final days and hours when family cannot make it, as no one should die alone.
Sunset has 2 palliative rooms in the local hospital which offer the following programs at no cost; 8-week bereavement walking course, Christmas dinner of hope, lending library, memorial garden at Island Park which has seen an increase in requests to hold small events for memorial services; providing a place for people with mental illness, anxiety, and families who lost loved ones a safe space for meditation. Visitors confirm the memorial garden helps them find peace, relaxation, and they enjoy reminiscing on memories.
Pockit Self Storage recognizes the importance of providing a compassionate, comfortable, and safe space for the Portage la Prairie community to live out their final days in peace, knowing they have caring individuals by their side. Since 2015, Pockit has been proud to provide Sunset Palliative Care Inc. with a safe and secure storage unit to support their annual garage sale efforts where they receive donations year-round to support funding for their ongoing programs.
